I’m sitting just outside the studio as the most recent OKCShow is being recorded with featured guest Kari Sowers. She’s from the nationally known and deeply impacting non-profit, The Mentoring Project based out of Oklahoma City.

Beyond the powerful work of The Mentoring Project and it’s advocacy for and training of mentors across our nation, John & Kari Sowers are a dynamic couple who both individually and together have written books, developed and expanded mentoring curriculums and served in large forums as voices of influence regarding the national plight of fatherlessness. It’s said that…

90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes – 32 times the average and 85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes – 20 times the average. (Center for Disease Control)

That’s just two quick stats that communicate clearly the impact the void of fathers has on our society and it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the issue. The Mentoring Project is a very timely and consequential movement that we’re fortunate to have based in Oklahoma City. They host an annual conference focused on fatherlessness and being equipped as mentors. The conference serves as a means to equip but it is also a significant contribution to the national conversation with church and community leaders regarding many of the issues they face today. This years conference is called PLACE.

Current events regarding race and class warfare are directly connected to fatherlessness and the need for more equipped mentors to be present in the community. I can’t stress enough the strategic and timely nature of this conference and TMP‘s work. Here’s a quote from their website regarding this years gathering.

Many leaders in the community and church space are working together to find common ground in the areas of relationships and reconciliation, especially in the wake of so many national tragedies and difficulties. In light of this, we are expanding our annual gathering to cover these pressing topics. We invite you to join us and other leaders from across the country to participate in this critical conversation.

Consider being a part of this timely and valuable gathering. The featured guests are national voices and outstanding examples. The opportunity for meaningful networking is experienced throughout the two days. There are only a few spaces remaining and it’s an opportunity not to be missed if you are an ‘okie’ that cares about solutions and real help in the city.

Also stay tuned for the next OKCShow featuring Kari Sowers of  The Mentoring Project being interviewed by Jason Baffrey. Hope to see you there. Place Conference Website.
